2007 Mini Cooper
51,000 miles

Was in idle came back to car and tried to put in gear died... tried restarting no luck. Had towed and they said timing chain broke. Have to tow it to Mini Dealer local because small repair shop doesn't have tools.
Is this issue only caused by not changing the oil regularly? Can the engine be completly gone? I bought from Car Max thank God for extended warranty didn't have any clue how bad Mini's could be!

Yup car was making horrible rattling noise in morning. I have a 09 s that just hit 55k. Went to restart car and turns over but won't turn on. All I get is a check engine light. Called mini roadside assistance waited for a tow truck 3 hours later no one came. I had to phone a friend to call AAA and tow was there in 15 mins. Completely disappointed with roadside service.
Mini is now at Sf Mini. I'm hoping warranty will cover this issue. Or I will definitely raise hell. I am so sad to not be in love with my car anymore. Shame on you Mini/BMW for not taking care of this known issue.

My 07 Mini S has just bit the dust. Timing chain failure- while I was driving, engine no good... So I take it to the dealership, have 55,000 miles on it. Needs whole new engine, cheaper than trying to replace it. They say they will half it with me, because it should not have happened, even though it is out of warranty. They estimate it around $3000. That was a month ago, they seem to have had trouble, they are not done, even though they got the new engine in over two weeks ago. They have given me a BMW to drive in the meantime, but I am really starting to worry. What if they can't fix it? Still owe a little on this car... Plus I do miss my MINI...

Mini Cooper S - 2009 - 25K miles

Tensioner failed completely. MINI replaced the part and its since been back in 3 times as I'm experiencing a tapping sound between 1000 and 3000 rpm's.

2007 Mini Cooper S - bought it used with 25K miles in August and engine failure in December with 27K miles. First they said it was the tensioner, then the oil pump and now they don't know what it was.

my 2007 mini cooper s has the same issue. The timing chain was replace right before the warranty expired. But after a few month till now, the noise comes back again and the engine light pops up when I don't warm up the car longer enough before I　drive on the road. When I do the inverse, the car is shaking back and forth hardly. But this only happen when I don't warm up the car long enough. Anyboday knows why? Please..

2009 Mini Cooper S 67,000 miles
Timing chain tensioner went out. Just out of warranty of course. Cost 1700.00 to repair. Have the knocks during cold weather also. Did not know about all of these problems. Afraid of future problems down the road. Wish I had never bought this car.

2008 Clubman Cooper S -- 23K miles.
Breakdown Day minus 6 months: I take car, purchased at 18K miles and immaculate, running like a hummingbird and just as cute, in to Flow Mini in Raleigh NC for a scheduled oil change and to reprogram a computer that was causing the passenger window to open slightly by itself. When I pick up the car, I'm told it's a good thing I came in, because now the oil changes are all up to date. Seems the previous owner may have changed the oil himself, I'm told. But not to worry.
Breakdown Day minus 3 weeks: The Death Rattle begins. We call Flow Mini in Raleigh NC and we're told this is a dirty valve problem. Not to worry. If we've been using anything less than high test, just run a few tanks of high test through and never use anything else. Be sure to drive fast when the opportunity permits.
Breakdown Day minus 1 week: A whole new noise begins like something is loose under the hood. Engine light come on, then goes off. Then comes on a day later. Flow Mini tells us to bring it in, and it just might be a good idea to have it carried in "since it is under warranty anyway." Make appointment for tow and service, and schedule them for Breakdown Day (we didn't know it was going to be Breakdown Day, of course.)
Entire week prior to Breakdown Day: Drive car a total of 5 miles. Death Rattle seems to be going away.
Breakdown Day: Two hours before towing appointment the car comes to a complete halt in a parking lot entrance road. Nice guy pushes Mini to a parking place while my wife fumes. I ride with truck to Flow Mini in Raleigh.
Breakdown Day plus 1: I'm informed that the previous owner had been 2000 miles late (maybe, that's what the chip in our car key apparently says) for his oil change, which is why they had told me that the oil schedule was "now up to date." Up to date, yet Mini corporate has informed the dealer that the warranty is no good. Bill for replacing timing chain? $3900.
Breakdown Day plus 5: It will be at least another 3 days before we can have the car. We have no idea what, if anything, we can do to reinstate the warranty, or whether it even matters, given the fact that Mini can arbitrarily decide when the warranty will be honored and when it will not.

Of the 10 or more cars we've owned over the course of our marriage, never has my wife said that she loved one of them, except for this Mini and a previous Mini convertible that we had to let go of because we needed more room. Only the Minis. And now, with a single unfair application of the warranty, (if we had been told that the late oil change meant that the warranty was going to be void in the event of a problem, it would be different) the love has gone. It's not cute any more. We don't feel that anticipatory rush at thinking about driving it. We're not likely to smile and wave at other Minis but to give them, instead, a sympathetic nod or a look of foreboding. The hummingbird has become an albatross.

When I pick up the car, I’m told it’s a good thing I came in, because now the oil changes are all up to date. Seems the previous owner may have changed the oil himself, I’m told. But not to worry.
Breakdown Day minus 3 weeks: The Death Rattle begins. We call Flow Mini in Raleigh NC and we’re told this is a dirty valve problem. Not to worry. If we’ve been using anything less than high test, just run a few tanks of high test through and never use anything else. Be sure to drive fast when the opportunity permits.
Breakdown Day minus 1 week: A whole new noise begins like something is loose under the hood. Engine light come on, then goes off. Then comes on a day later. Flow Mini tells us to bring it in, and it just might be a good idea to have it carried in “since it is under warranty anyway.” Make appointment for tow and service, and schedule them for Breakdown Day (we didn’t know it was going to be Breakdown Day, of course.)

2007 Mini Cooper S
Approx 57K Miles
Heard the knocking and running really bad. Found there was no oil in the car. Fixed that and still knocking. Dealer told me $2300 to repair today and wouldn't let me leave dealership for fear of engine damage.

At 77,000 miles, my 2008 Cooper S flashed the "Low Oil Pressure Light," then "Increased Emissions," then that was accompanied by super loud exhaust noises and a loss of most engine power. Mechanic says it has something to due with timing belt and admits it's strange that that would go out so early.

2007 Mini Cooper S JCW 37000 miles.
Developed "Death Rattle" several weeks ago. Out of warranty time wise. Is currently at Ferman mini. They said Mini would cover part of timing chain & guide replacement. I think they should cover it all. Definitely a recall issue.

Same issues and called mini USA to complain. They told my to pack sand. Mini should be fixing this issue. They know it's a problem that's why they have reengineered the component twice! I'm done with Mini.

2008 Mini Cooper S 24k Miles. Death rattle started in cold weather at 11k miles. I complained to mini dealer and they blew me off. Now it rattles often. Took to my mechanic for oil change and engine oil had sludge buildup.

Broken timing chain at 52700k miles. Now waiting to hear from dealership on the extent of the damage. So far they are taking full responsibility except that I keep hearing about slight leak in the water pump. If they do top half of the engine due to damage from broken chain where does that leave me??

2008 S Clubman: 44k Miles
Car has developed "death rattle" diesel sound in the past week on cold starts. Taking it in to dealer this week before the 4-year/50k warranty expires. I'm afraid to drive it after reading this forum. We'll see what happens.

I own a 2007 Cooper S. 45,000 miles so far. I have taken it to the dealership for all the scheduled services. At around 27K, I had engine problems, had to be towed to the dealer and they replaced the timing chain and tensioner. Now, the noise is back, took back to dealer. Dealer stated they would fix it for 1100.00 but I do not think I should have to pay for there mistakes. This is a known problem that MINI should fix not the owners.

2008 Cooper S. 50k miles. Have it in Princeton Mini for death rattle issue. Timing chain shoot and oil leak from head seal and tension chain bolt . Turbo has carbon build up as well. Total to fix will be 2300. Dealer told warranty company that the car came in low on oil. Never had loss of power nor did oil light ever come on. Oil loss is caused from bolt backing out of head in motor. Hello dealer why ya think it's low on oil!

2010 Cooper S. Replaced tensioner today. ~45,000kms. Also replacing engine coolant pump. Apparently it was not cooling the turbo...

Other issues they will not address "yet":
-"Brights" fail after going over large bumps and sometimes stop working for no reason.
-Engine hesitates under heavy acceleration sometimes.

At 30,000kms, manifold replaced, cylinder heads had to be removed, cleaned, and reassembled.

I love the car, but had no idea it would have so many problems so early on. Also disappointed that they replace the tensioner rather than the timing chain...

I own a 2007 Cooper S. 50,000. I have taken to dealer for all services. At 40,000, I heard engine rattling on cold starts. It kept getting worse. Dealer first stated they could not find anything. Then after it got worse, and I took it back, they told me timing chain guide had broken apart and scattered thru oil pan. My car was one month outside of warranty, and after some tense discussions, they replaced timing chain, tensioner, and guide. Now, about 6 months later, the same thing is happening. Loud rattling, etc. I'm taking it back to dealer, and am scared about what they'll find. This is a chronic problem that MINI should fix, or the firm will surely start losing street cred and dedicated customers.

Same issue. Jan 07 Mini Cooper S bought new. Made the noise at around 7,000 miles. Took it in under warranty. Dealer (Berry, Chiswick) said it was normal and nothing to worry about. Now it's cold it is back with a vengeance. Going to call them to discuss and refer them to this site.

2007 cooper S. Currently have 64k miles. I had the tensioner issue replaced TWICE before the 50k mile warrenty, luckily. Now, I recently started leaking oil and check engine light went on. Turns out I had to replace the oil gasket. Also when they opened up the engine, some bracket that holds us the chain BROKE clean off, dropped a bit of plastic into the chain gears and has now made the chain skip a tooth. Not sure what my total bill is going to be but it's not going to be pretty. I really wanted to get the Countryman since I'm pregnant but I'm scared mini makes mistakes.

My '07 has 27k miles on it. First heard the rattle at 19k. Took it to the dealer (San Francisco) before the warranty expired for the 24k service and described the sound as "diesel like", as though it wasn't getting oil to the head. They could not replicate the sound and told me there was no precedent or notice on the issue. I was unaware of others having trouble till I found this URL today, so I was on a road trip 300 miles from home and on the coast highway between Cayucos and Big Sur when the engine stopped w/o notice. That is a major tow to an unknown mechanic, a one way car rental home, and a lousy week-end, and a pile of cash. But I did have an adventure, though different than the one I sought. This could have gone very differently had the dealer been straight with me.

My Wife has a 2007 Mini Cooper S and the engine just went out at 75,000 miles due to the timing chain/tensioner problem. Now, we are stuck buying a $3,500 used engine and upside down in the car. I wish, we would have done some due diligence before purchasing a 2007 Mini Cooper S. BMW should step up and help with these problems. We love to drive it but very unreliable. :(

2007 MINI COOPER S - 48,000 miles
Just had to have the turbo replaced in my cooper because of "loss of suction" $3000 later and they are now saying my timing chain also needs replacing for only $1600. As well as the gear shifter for $800. I mean I'm just basically throwing money away on this car when every month something costs thousands of dollars to fix. I just saying I'm outraged 48,000 miles is not much on a car that has always been fully serviced at the mini dealership now its falling apart as soon as my warrenty is out!

Loud rattle last year the dealer said not to worry. bringing it in this weekend to ask them to fix it as it's getting worse. with 55k miles I want them to pay.

My 2009 Mini Cooper Clubman has had issues with the timing chain twice. The first time was at 39k miles, and the dealership adjusted the tensioner under the warranty, the service guy said this was a known and common issue; the second time was at 52k miles and the dealership denied that this was a known and common issue, said I had voided my warranty because I did not have the oil changed the first time at 19k miles but instead at 23k and that the timing chain issue was my fault. I called MiniUSA and they were just as unhelpful. I took it to another shop and had it repaired - when they looked in the engine, the oil (which the dealership had changed at 43k miles, and said wasn't due for another change for 11k miles more) was thick as mud. The independent shop looked at all of my service records, and called other dealerships and shops around and learned that this is a common problem, that it is usually related to sludgy oil, and that they say that often the warranty is voided. They (the folks who fixed my car) believe that this is because of the oil change schedule being so long in intervals (roughly 20k miles between each). Other manufacturers (Toyota, notably) have changed the oil change frequency and fixed engines due to that, although they would not go so far as to call it a "recall". But it should be for Mini - if you look at all the complaints (funny how few "I love my Mini" sites there are, in comparison), it's clear that Mini is denying known problems and losing credibility and business.

Yep. All of above happened to my 2007 mini Cooper S. Death rattle followed by engine light, followed by diagnoses of stretched timing chain caused by faulty tensioner. And all of this just past my warranty. It's really too bad, too, because I really love this car. Up to now, it's my favorite car I've ever had. But now I feel like I should sell it before more goes wrong and it costs me a fortune. I should have become suspicious when my windshield recently cracked for no reason. That is yet another commonly reported problem--soft glass. Both are bizarre things to happen on a young, low-mileage car. I'll be sorry to see my Mini go.

2007 Mini Cooper S,36,000 miles had engine failure due to vacuum pump. 2 valves and pistons replaced but no engine replacement. Now I have the cold start knocking and engine light on. @50,000 miles I think the engine is junk. Our Toyotas didn't need repair until about 250,000 miles

2008 Clubman S. 73,000 miles, but reported the issue before the warranty was up. It's obvious that Mini has sold a defective part/parts. Why has there been no litigation to force a recall of these defective parts?!

My 2009 Cooper S died in the road today and had to be towed to the Mini dealership. Called the dealer last week and described the noise. He thought it might be the timing chain but said it would be safe for me to drive till Monday...NOT! I have already had the timing chain replaced less than a year ago. Less than 27,000 miles! Very frustrating indeed!

We have (had) two 2008 Mini Cooper Ss and the first one had a timing chain problem right at 50+K miles. They said it needed to be replaced. I just took the second Mini Cooper 48+K (just outside the 3-year warrenty) in because of the knocking sound upon start up and the tech said 'possible timing chaing'.

Come on, two Mini Cooper 2008s and the same thing happens at approximately the same time? There has to be a relation.

2009 Mini Clubman S - 11 months ago (at 39k miles) the dealership put in a tensioner on the timing chain, due to rough starts, under warranty. Now at 52000 they say that the slight knocking at startup is the timing chain again, and that it needs to be replaced at a cost of $2140. They now deny it's a known problem, but the first time they freely said "this is a common problem with these timing chains". When I complained to MiniUSA, the dealership increased the estimate by saying that the water pump needs replacing too ("seal is worn") and that they (dealership) would generously do both for the discounted price of $2495. No help from MiniUSA or the dealership. I have had this car less than 3 years, for 52,000 miles, and have had continual problems with it, the dealership, and MiniUSA. I am like Scott - once a fan, now I do my best to tell people about how unreliable Mini is.

Bought 2007 MiniS used--so excited. Drove for 6 months and now it is in shop--timing chain etc.--same story as everyone else. Called the service dept. at the Mini dealer and he said no recalls, but he is working on 3 to 5 a month with the same problems! Local shop having to do repairs (afraid to drive the car and do more damage!). I e-mailed Mini but have had no response.

I have had a knocking in my engine for over 2.5 years and was always told this "was normal." My 2007 Cooper S had 76 000 miles when the timing chain broke. I do not know how bad the damage is as the car is still in the shop. I am livid and will NEVER buy a BMW product again. This car has been in the shop for more parts than I could list here, but the major items are 3 manifolds, and numerous other parts for an inability to start in the cold. Additionally the normal wear and tear seems excessive. Anyone know where I can dump this piece of..... When it out of the shop, it's gone!

I brought my 2007 MCS (49,800 mi.) in and just got a call from the dealership that the "diesel noise" I'd been hearing was in fact the timing belt slipping. This is the second time it's been replaced in the last 10 months. Thankfully I'm still under warranty (for 200 more miles!) - but still, this is clearly a situation that Mini needs to address by way of a recall.

2008 Clubman S. Bought the car with 43k miles on it (lease return). Initially had issues with noise when the sunroof was closed, and also certain exterior bulbs not illuminating. Dealership replaced sunroof seal and computer which was faulty. Returned to dealer at 48k miles for what I assumed was the "death rattle". Dealership advised that the timing chain was stretched beyond tolerances. Dealer replaced :timing chain, tensioner, rails, seals, gears. Dealership advised tat this is a known issue and that they wished BMW would do something about it. So far the dealership has been very honest and up front with me.. Hopefully this won't change when the car goes out of warranty!

I have a 2009 mini s convertible that I bought brand new. At 6000 miles the fule pump went and now at only 24k miles the timing belt and tensioner had to be replaced. It was leaking oil so I took it in. I reported to them that the car was knocking loudly during the cold weather last winter. They checked it and said no problems. This car is giving me casue for concern. Not sure if I should buy the extended warranty to just get out now?

I have experienced a related problem. When a quart low on oil, the timing chain is apparently severly affected, creating that cold running noise at around 3,000RPM. Intermittent problem. Took it in for service. Could not duplicate problem, said a quart low on oil was the issue. Topped off oil and sent me on my way. One week later, problem back. Intermittent again so I had no faith in the dealership's ability to recreate the problem. Waited until the problem was frequent enough to be replicated and brough tit back in. By then however, the car was out of warranty. This time 2 quarts low on oil which apparently caused $2,000 of damage I am expected to pay out of pocket.

At first, I was just a customer unhappy with the service I was getting. Now with their insistance on this being my fault and that a quart low on oil causes a catastrophic failure, they have turned me into a customer not only dissastifiesd with the sevice... but now I genuinely hate the brand. The product is poor. I have gone from "Mini Evangelist" to convincing strangers I meet to not buy a Mini. Way to go Mini. So far I've cost you one new car sale. It's only been a week. We'll see how many more I can rack up over the next couple of years.

2007 S. 52,000 miles. No longer under warranty. Dealer said it was a stretched timing chain, guide rail and about 15 replacement parts. Cost over $2000. Very discouraged since I had not planned on that expensive a repair after I paying for a $2000 extended maintenance warranty at purchase. LOVE my mini and the dealer did what they could to help. Don't understand why Mini won't recall these parts, since my dealer admitted the new parts are greatly improved over the originals.

2008 S. 57,000 miles. Check engine light came on. Fault code P0012. Removed the valve cover and the chain guard is disintegrated into hundreds of chunks. One broken gear tooth. Cam shaft out of synch. Interestingly, the car was running. Assume it was the tensioner that allowed slack in the timing chain. Sure hope this does not happen again.

Out of warranty. MINI says it is not a recall. Local shop doing repairs as dealership is 180 miles.

2007 Mini Cooper S

I took my Mini to the dearler for the sunroof won't open and Engine "death rattle" on the following dates:

Oct 15, 2008= 26,113 miles-(dealership could not duplicate "death rattle" and sunroof issue but adjusted and lubricated sunroof)

Oct 28, 2008= 26,797 miles-(dealership could not duplicate either issue but adjusted sunroof/stated sunroof could not be adjusted any further)

Feb 9, 2009= 33,987 miles (-dealership could not duplicate "stuck" sunroof and "death rattle"- 3qts low oil-NO LEAK. They stated that sunroof could be adjusted to open but with wind noise while closed or adjusted to remove the wind noise but not open) I asked why the vehicle was burning so much oil if it were 3qts low and why didn't a warning light come on to warn me the vehicle was low on oil? They stated the vehicle has no low oil or oil temp warning sensor. I found that they had overfilled the oil!

Feb 11, 2009= 34,083 miles (-dealership removed excess oil and replaced timing chain tensioner)

Feb 26, 2009= 35,577 miles (-check engine light on-still has "death rattle". Dealership DME Program Error and replaced timing chain tensioner for the 2nd time/this makes 3 tensioners so far! Dealership promised that Mini was looking into the "death rattle" and when a fix was found they would cover the repair even if out of warranty).

March 10, 2010= 57,194 miles/"out of warranty" (-sunroof stuck open only on one side! Dealership states jammed sunroof cassette and broken motor gears, tried to mannually close but found gear was ground down due to poor contact with cassette. Needs new cassette and motor. Repair cost $3,840.00) I declined to pay the dealership $800.00 just to close the sunroof and paid another vendor $75.00 to close it. MY SUNROOF DOES NOT WORK AT ALL!!!! (Anyone know where I can get a used sunroof cassette and two motor gears?)

Early April, 2010= Mini Corporate offered to provide sunroof parts ONLY if I had the dealership do brake and oil change maintenance that was needed on last visit, March 10, 2010. I explained that I had already had the maintenance completed by another vendor. Mini stated that if I did not pay the dealership for the maintenance then they would not provide the sunroof parts. I refused to pay the dealership for maintenance no longer needed and therefore did not receive the sunroof parts from Mini.

April 23, 2010= 57,194 miles (-received Fuel pump warranty repair in the mail= Dealership FINALLY found "death rattle" fix for which I had to pay the $844.40 labor! Dealer found broken timing chain, found timing chain guide to be broken and missing a large piece. Removed oil pan to retrieve piece of chain guide. Timing chain had stretched causing guide to break. Timing chain measured 70mm being 2mm over spec of 68mm-replaced timing chain, guide rails and tension. THIS IS NOW THE 3RD TENSIONER REPLACED-THIS MAKES 4 TENSIONER ON THIS CAR! Dealership refused to give me the old timing chain or let me see it!

WHAT GOOD IS A WARRANTY IF THE DEALERSHIP REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE NEED OF A REPAIR UNTIL THE WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED AND THEN YOU ARE EXPECTED TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR???????????????????????????????????????????????????

Feb 9, 2009= 33,987 miles (-dealership could not duplicate “stuck” sunroof and “death rattle”- 3qts low oil-NO LEAK. They stated that sunroof could be adjusted to open but with wind noise while closed or adjusted to remove the wind noise but not open) I asked why the vehicle was burning so much oil if it were 3qts low and why didn’t a warning light come on to warn me the vehicle was low on oil? They stated the vehicle has no low oil or oil temp warning sensor. I found that they had overfilled the oil!

Feb 11, 2009= 34,083 miles (-dealership removed excess oil and replaced timing chain tensioner)

Feb 26, 2009= 35,577 miles (-check engine light on-still has “death rattle”. Dealership DME Program Error and replaced timing chain tensioner for the 2nd time/this makes 3 tensioners so far! Dealership promised that Mini was looking into the “death rattle” and when a fix was found they would cover the repair even if out of warranty).

March 10, 2010= 57,194 miles/”out of warranty” (-sunroof stuck open only on one side!

April 23, 2010= 57,194 miles (-received Fuel pump warranty repair in the mail= Dealership FINALLY found “death rattle” fix for which I had to pay the $844.40 labor!

Had the noise issue at cold start since 2007, now with over 60K, the issue remains. Dealer indicated several reasons over the years: While the mini was under warrantee, twice they claimed that my oil level was too low and that it is common for owners to not know how to read the level properly. On another occasion they stated that they made a small adjustment to timing belt, and on another routine visit they claimed that this is normal for this motor design. Discussed with mini dealer - they say I'm out of luck if there is major failure due to this issue. I'll have to buy a new car or new engine. Not a very good message.

2007 MCS - per Universal City MINI "faulty timing chain tensioner replaced."
(Part # 11-31-7-597-895 Chain Tensioner). This was done back in 10/2010 with 21K. MINI now has 41K and has been running good. I'll hear a little bit of rattle during cold starts but goes away after about 30 seconds. I've been monitoring the car to see if it gets worse. I may have to bring it in again.

I have a MINI Cooper S 2007 model I bought in 09 with 30K miles on it. In now has roughly 70K miles on it and I've had it in every couple of months. Several of those trips ended up being the timing chain. They'd adjust it / replace it and tell me I was good to go then 2-3 months later starting problems and loud knocking noise all over again. Finally, the chain actually broke one day (around 60K miles) and "took out the rest of the engine" according the dealership. Luckily, the car came with the extended warranty and everthing was covered. They had to submit pictures etc. to MINI to use as a case study and ended up replacing basically everything under the hood. Still confused on how they didn't see this coming with the number of times they've had to fix the timing chain. I love my driving my car but I don't see how I'll be able to keep it after the warranty runs out at 100K miles.

I bought my 2007 MINI Cooper S brand new. After only a few thousand miles it began to make noise. They replaced the timing chain tensioner and the problem seemed OK for a while. I will say that since this first fix the car has never felt the same. After a short while the noise came back. It was worse, the car was definitely down on power and the mpg took a sudden dive. At this point the tensioner was changed again, along with the chain. Although the noise lessened, the car has never been the same. At 20,00 miles, the car is back at the dealer again. The noise is worse than ever, including the cold start noise which has surfaced. The car does not feel anything like it should, considering the way the car I paid for felt and considering the way tghis car was broken in exactly as reccomended. This time, though, they tell me there is nothing to fix! They want me to take the car back as is and do nothing! Why is BMW screwing us? I for one cannot afford a life-size model to collect dust in my garage while I go out and purchase another car to actually drive...... Has anyone tried to do anything with the Lemon Law?

2008S, I had the same engine knock problem, same exact noise, when starting during cold weather. This winter the car began to misfire at 25,000 miles. I had to have it towed to the Mini dealer. They say they found that a spark plug was damaged, (ceramic was broken) so they replaced it. Also, they asked it I had heard the engine noise. They said that they heard the engine noise and found the timing chain to be loose so they adjusted it. The car seem to be running fine, except I noticed that it seem to be using a lot of oil (not leaking). Two weeks ago at 30,000 the car developed a starting problem (starter wouldn't engage). Then after a few days the car started to misfire (yellow engine light). The next day I took it to another Mini dealer, they said that the car was OK to drive until they could get it on Monday, as long as the yellow engine light didn't start flashing. On Sunday, the car started to misfire and knock. The engine light began flashing. On Monday the Mini dealer found, a broken spark plug ceramic and that the engine was shot (broke piston, ring and cylinders scared). They said that the engine had an internal failure and needed to be replaced. I'm told I won't have the car for four or five weeks because the engine has to be shipped from England. I'm high and dry!!

At 79,750 km had the tensioner fixed because of loud noise, brake booster replaced. At 80,250 the engine blew and needed replacing. Warranty expired at 80,000km but Mini says they are fixing for free.

2009 Cooper S - The tensioner bolt backed out at 60k miles and I lost all of the oil. Fortunately I was entering a parking garage and not on the highway at the time. Dealer replaced the tensioner for $400.00. Who knows what other damage may have occurred.

I complained to Mini about the cold start rattle when my '07 Cooper S was close to the end of the warranty period and was told "it's normal..don't worry." Now...less than a year later, and no longer under warranty, I miraculously have a bad timing chain with a bill of $2100 to replace it with no guarantee on how long the new one will last. I've had a good number of cars in my life and drove all of them no less than 175k miles before buying a new car and this is the first car that I've seen to need a timing chain at ~55k miles. THANK YOU BMW/MINI for screwing me over and F-You!

I have a 2007 Cooper S ( or should I say pooper s:) with 34k on it and just got the call from the dealership and the timing belt has streached and threw the timing off enough to bend some valves:( The dealership had the balls to tell me that problem could come from low oil (wasnt even a 1/4 quart low) and that the nosie you all have described (which my MINI has also been doing since I bought it 6 months ago) was from the turbo warming up!! So now that I have researched the problem myself and found the numorus complaints that I have, on here. I am going to be bring a HUGE FIGHT to them if they try and tell me this isnt covered!!! My factory warrenty ended 2 weeks ago!! I have an extended but knowing that MINI knows about this problem makes it their problem now the way I see it:)

From one post ago

I have sent the car to Ferman Mini hoping that a fuel pump is bad with it. I got a letter in this week stating that the warranty on the fuel pump has been extended to 120k. This letter acknowledges that this could result in a lack of power which has happened to me on many occasions. The motor also needs to be topped off with oil every 2k!!! I would bet that all these problems have been caused by a LEAN MIXTURE! That would mean that this car has been running 50k on lean mix and has caused major damage to the motor. A recall is a must. Mini is trying to bypass the situation to keep from a major motor recall and extreme damage to resale values and customer satisfaction ratings. There is no excuse for these issues at 78k!

Dave,

It is almost impossible to diagnose this from what you have described. Has your car made the noise that was in the videos? The missfire could possibly be a carbon buildup in the engine. The mini groups have also pointed out that this maybe another serious issue that is starting to come up. You could attempt to clean the carbon out using this method.

Hello

My 07 Mini Cooper S has stopped running with 79k on the motor. It has had issues for quite a while and a missfire problem as well. Have the timing chains skipped a tooth? I'm glad that I'm not the only disgruntled Mini owner. I HATE THIS CAR!!!!!

Jaime,

I would highly suggest contacting Mini directly for this problem. The dealers have been screwing the people out of the warranty period. They should resolve it due to it being a known issue. If not please let us know and we will attempt to help out also.

Thanks a ton for this how to process with photos. I was able to change my rear struts out but ran into an issue with the fronts. While trying to get the pinch bolt off of the left front, the head snapped off! I had sprayed it with a solvent the day before and again prior to trying to take it off. I did not hit it with anything, just applied pressure. I'm so bummed. I'm hoping the mechanic can get it out. Grrrrrrr....

07 Cooper S. 50,200 told me the to first have them change the pulley then if it wasn't resolved to do the timing service at a song of $1600. Well the pulley didn't fix it and they say i'm gonna have to pay. Not very happy about this. MINI needs to do something!

On stock springs, about -.9 after stud removal. I do not recommend slotting the tower. Inexpensive IE fixed camber plates will provide - 1.8 degrees camber up front on 1.25 inch drop springs. With the stud removed and any setting less than -2 degrees, there is adequate clearance for stock and/or MegaMINI spec 127 springs. The neat thing about R56 strut support adjustability is it carries over to a fixed camber plate too, so you can set them to -1.5 if that's what you desire.

Its only about an extra .5 of negative camber if I remember right. My alignment was almost dead on from factory after this mod. However I did have them put a more aggressive street/track alignment done while I was in the shop. I dont personally suggest cutting up the holes to get more camber. Camber plates are cheap enough for this car to do it right.

Same engine knock problem.. same exact noise. Tried to start up the car again, and it wouldn't restart- had it towed to Mini. They say the timing chain jumped, took out the valves- engine shot. Now, they are saying that even though I had the car fully maintenanced 2 weeks ago and no problems whatso ever, that because at 25000-30000 miles (even though the service indicator didn't indicate service needed at that time) I didn't maintenance the vehicle for a "level 1 preventative maintenance" that its my negligence and they've voided the warranty. No help from Mini Corporate (called 3 times) and the dealership refusing to cover under warranty.

After alignment, how much did you get?
How close is the spring to the inner fender bulges?
If one elongated the holes a tad, do you think -1.5 is possible?
(We did that in the "old" days, then welded a washer on top to hold it fixed)

I am in Australia, I have a 2007 R56 Cooper. I picked it up with 2500 km and it now has 60,000 km. The car has had the cold start problem since the day I picked it up. Its been to 2 dealers and I have had the car off the road for days at a time. Finally BMW rep has authorised the timing chain, belts and tensioners all be replaced! It seems to be a world wide issue that needs to be addressed.

Wayne,

Its good to hear that your dealership has fixed your car. Keep an eye on it the fixes don't seem to be permanent. The problem in your case did not cause any internal engine damage. That issue has only been seen when the timing chain system completely fails. Eventually if they did not fix this issue with your car you could have seen complete engine failure and destruction.

'08 MCS w/ JCW dealer package. Last winter the dealer told me it wqs "normal operation" and did nothing. Two weeks ago they replaced the timing chain along with 10 other parts (tensioners, guide rails etc.) at 9100 miles.
This appears to be the fix, though the temperatures since the fix have been moderate: the rattle is most pronounced when the temps are in the 20's or below. I will monitor this, of course.
Did the problem cause damage or premature wear to the engine??
